As the school year ends and kids return full time to their Colorado Springs homes, it’s time to start considering some fun activities to keep the 10-and-under crowd entertained and maybe encourage their interest in some new topics. These outings are sure to create some fond memories for the whole family.

Kids and dinosaurs are a popular combination, so why not encourage them to learn more with a visit to the Dinosaur Resource Center. Your budding paleontologist will enjoy seeing fossils of T-Rexes, raptors, huge carnivorous fish, and flying and marine reptiles. It’s also possible to watch experts at work in a fossil preparation laboratory.

The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is regularly in the top-10 zoos in the country, so it’s definitely worth a visit. The natural mountainside setting is a great place to see rare, endangered, and native animals, including wolves, mountain lions, grizzly bears, moose, as well as even more exotic animals such as penguins and hippos. Plus, there’s the opportunity to hand-feed some of the zoo’s giraffes.

A unique experience for youngsters is a ride on the Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad. This authentic steam engine that is 100 years old takes you on a 45-minute trip through the historic mining towns of Cripple Creek and Victor. The size and speed of the trip makes it enjoyable for young and old.

A great experience is a trip to the Manitou cliff dwellings where you can learn about the ancient Puebloan people. This child-friendly experience includes hands-on attractions, as well as a chance to explore the dwellings and see Native American dances.

Finally, the Ghost Town Museum is just a great place to have fun as you explore an Old West town made up of actual structures that were once part of a thriving mountainside town. You can pan for gold, print out a “wanted” poster, crank up the player piano, and much more.
